Grant Writing Workshop Syllabus

Day 1: GRANT WRITING I

The fundamentals of this liberating method of grant writing are presented in this workshop. Participants will discover first hand what a seasoned grant proposal evaluator looks for while reading grant submissions. You will learn step by step how to incorporate project administration and evaluation into a grant proposal. Everyone from the veteran development director to the dedicated volunteer will benefit from this training.

Following this training participants will be able to:

  • List 7 activities in which an organization should be involved to successfully access grants.
  • Discuss the structure of a well organized non profit company and the roles of Board and Staff.
  • Interpret and analyze the language of funding announcements and grant application guidelines.
  • Describe the required criteria of an Objective.
  • List and discuss the components that constitute the "heart" of any grant application.

You can also learn to use grant writing as a community organization tool. How to put heart in your problem statement. The importance of writing out goals and objectives in a proper format.

Hourly Agenda

9:00 a.m. - Noon How agencies can maximize resources. Lecture, Discussion & Brainstorming.

Circle of ResourceEntanglements (C.O.R.E.) Guide.
Review of multiple funding sources including, but not limited to, state, local and federal government; private corporate and community foundations.

Listing of fifteen ways to make an organization more likely to be funded.

Identification of twenty-two items to have immediately available before writing a grant.

Review of the Non Profit Corporation structure and roles & responsibilities of Board & Staff.

   
Noon - 1:00 p.m. Lunch - On Your Own
   
1:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Elements of a Grant. Lecture, Small Group Discussion & Role Play.

Identification of 18 elements of a grant proposal presented to maximize grantee comprehension and maintain consistency with funding intent.

Review of Problem Statements, Goal Statements and Objectives based on the "management by objectives" concept.

Compare and contrast a Letter of Proposal, Letter of Inquiry, RFP and Common Grant Application.

Develop/practice writing elements of a Foundation Grant Application.

Day 2: GRANT WRITING II

This workshop session features actual grant writing and peer review. Participants will have the opportunity to share previous experience/training in grant writing. Everyone is invited, but not required, to bring grant applications they wish to have reviewed and completed. Highlighted topics include Federal Forms, Budget Forms, Budget Narratives, and Accounting Methodology. Grant Presentation Methods will be discussed with a focus on Link Statements, Cover Letter items and Communication with the funder. Exemplary case studies will be presented. This workshop features a special emphasis on larger dollar grants and federal applications.

Following this training participants will be able to:

  • Define and develop compatible Client Oriented Problem & Goal Statements.
  • Compare and contrast an RFP, Letter of Inquiry, Letter of Proposal, Concept Letter, and Common Grant Applications.
  • Discuss the steps in the completion of Foundation Grant.
  • List 10 grant sources and identify search methods to locate funding opportunities appropriate for a specific projects.
  • Develop Objectives for a specified goal that incorporates program evaluation concepts.
  • Read, analyze & draft at least one foundation grant, one state government grant, & one federal grant (up to $50,000 each).
  • Complete federal grants.

Discuss budget forms, budget narratives and budget components.
